Visiting Swan Hill Region? It is a bustling agricultural hub, with Swan Hill city at its centre.
The perfect time to visit
With more sunny days per year than the Gold Coast, and a temperature that averages 23 degrees, the Swan Hill Region is a natural choice for lovers of sunshine, good food and wine, and many outdoor and water activities to keep you busy – no matter the season.
Set on three hectares of land on the banks of the Little Murray River, the Pioneer Settlement lets you experience Australian history first hand.
You will find real-life Mallee cottages, a hotel, schools and shops, plus our enormous collection of working tractors and machinery – sourced mostly from the local area. You can feel the heat in the blacksmith shop, listen to the sounds of the old Pianola or take a ride through our Mallee township on a horse and cart. As you wander the site, you can also chat to our staff and volunteers, all looking the part in costumes of the period. The Pioneer Settlement opened in 1966 after a joint community and government effort to recognise the unique history of our Murray Mallee region. By the 1970s, the Pioneer Settlement was one of the most popular tourism destinations in Victoria, if not Australia, and the concept has been emulated around the country. The Settlement is now introducing more ground-breaking tourism concepts to complement the historical Mallee townships. The Heartbeat of the Murray Experience includes a laser light show that, in a world-first, will combine modern laser technology with the natural river environment. It will tell the story of the Murray region from prehistoric times until today. In addition to the rich history, visitors can enjoy a range of interactive exhibits that bring the past to life. Join us for seasonal events celebrating local culture, food, and art, ensuring that every visit offers something new and exciting. Whether you’re a history buff or simply looking for a unique family outing, the Pioneer Settlement promises an unforgettable journey through time.

Pink Lakes
Murray-Sunset National Park is the largest national park in Victoria. The area known as Pink Lakes consists of four lakes – Crosbie, Becking, Kenyon and Hardy. Changing in colour from a glistening white to a deep pink, the lakes are a stunning sight almost all year round. They are as picturesque on bright moon-lit nights as they are in daylight. Come for the pink lakes, stay for the wildlife! Throughout the day you can enjoy the sights and sounds of kangaroos, emus, reptiles and birds. On a warm afternoon you may see Rainbow Bee-eaters chasing flying insects or Mallee and bearded dragons scurrying to the cover of a triodia (porcupine grass) clump.Hundreds of species of native plants grow in this region. Near the Pink Lakes, all the plants are salt-tolerant due to the high salt content of the water and soil.
